Dubbing Differences: Disney's The Rescuers

I found the following notable changes in the Brazilian Portuguese dub of Disney's The Rescuers:

  • The film's title is Bernard and Bianca.

  • The Rescue Aid Society is called the Help Society or Relief Society.

  • The Chairman of the society is instead called the “President.”

  • Rufus says “Catnip snaps!” and Penny clarifies that they’re ginger snaps. In Portuguese, though, he says “Cookies for cats!” and Penny giggles “No, they’re cookies for people!” And instead of saying that an old codger like him could use a little ginger, he just comments how he enjoyed the cookies.

  • Rufus says that the police gave up looking “one month ago” instead of “weeks ago.”

  • Snoops’s name is Asrúbal.

  • As is similar to other Disney dubs I’ve watched, the word “idiota” (idiot) is substituted for a lot of the English insults, from “road hog” to “knucklehead.”

  • Bianca says “You know flights never leave on time” instead of “You know flights are always late.”

  • When Bernard is talking about trains, instead of saying “They serve Roquefort,” he says “They serve cheese, and I like cheese.”

  • Orville’s name is Abílio.

  • Medusa tells Snoops to send up the flares, and instead of saying “light up the swamp so I can find her,” she says something like “so I can find her with my rocket.”

  • Instead of saying “Wowee! This new batch really packs a wallop!” Luke (who’s named Juca) says “This wine is worse than an alligator lambada rave!

  • Elle Mae’s name is Floresbela, which is a Portuguese name that literally means “Pretty flowers.”

  • Evinrude’s name is Zigzag, which in Portuguese is pronounced “Ziggyzoggy.” :D

  • Bianca says that Evinrude’s carburetor is “clogged up” instead of “pooped.”

  • Medusa in English says “It’s as simple as that,” but in Portuguese the phrase is “It’s the easiest thing there is.”

  • In English, Bianca says “If I was only a ten-foot mouse, I’d show her.” In Portuguese, she says “If only I were a vole, she’d just see.”

  • The children at the orphanage Penny prays for are changed from Jennifer, Bobby, Mary, and Julie to Maria, Julia, and Jorge.

  • Concerning the diamond-filled Teddy, Medusa says “I can’t live without him anymore” instead of “I’ve grown quite attached to him.”
