In this new series, I'll be exploring the aspects of the five gods of my homebrew D&D world, Hearth, collectively known as The Pentatheon. I've organized each article like the sourcebook Mythic Odysseys of Theros, so consult that book if you're not sure how things like piety work. I personally highly recommend limiting your homebrew pantheon to just a few gods like this. It's much easier for the players to remember and much simpler for fleshing them out as the DM.
The Pentantheon: Deities of Hearth
A pantheon of five gods guide religious life on Hearth: Skyfather, Hearthmatron, Moondancer, Deepwarden, and Lawbringer. Their relationships, commonalities, and differences are metaphorically represented by a pentagon in which each deity forms one of the points, with each god having two close allies and two gods with whom they are most often in conflict. There is technically a sixth god, Lorekeeper, but the Pentatheon prefers to pretend he doesn’t exist, and Lorekeeper is all-too-willing to stay out of their matters and keep to himself.
Divine Characteristics
The gods of Hearth are omnipotent in their own sphere of dominion, but the risk of incurring the wrath of the other gods and the delicate balance of the Pentatheon’s relationships with each other, as well as the gods’ general timeless vision of the cosmos and their subsequent disdain for mortal affairs, keeps them from affecting too much on the material plane.
The gods manifest themselves as Large humanoids, though they have the power to take any form they choose. They can speak to mortals through dreams and omens, and in extremely rare cases when the balance of the cosmos itself is at risk, a god can expend a large amount of power to create a personal avatar to physically manifest on the material plane.
All the gods despise fiends of all types, and regardless of the form that their personal messengers and envoys they create take (even in the case of Deepwarden’s undead minions), all of them are considered celestials.
