I marathonned all the Pirates of the Caribbean movies this year and really, genuinely enjoyed them. I remember being so confused when I watched them the first time, but they're meant to just be fun adventures, not sensical-plot films. Anyway, them and reading through Ghosts of Saltmarsh gave me some ideas for some interesting ships you might encounter on the high seas of D&D.
Interesting Ships
d20 Ship
The entire ship is a magic item. When attuned to, the captain can mentally control all the ropes on deck (entangle), sails, rudder, and ballistae as lair actions with no crew needed.
The crew is normal, but the officers are secretly flesh golems.
A crew of devils wearing pirate garb, with imps that swab the deck.
A necromancer with a crew of skeletons.
The Selkie, the richest vessel ever to sail the seas. It has every Superior Ship Upgrade in Ghosts of Saltmarsh, gilded rails and deck, silk sails. Captained by Captain Ray Saltbeard who says the source of his wealth was the legendary pirate "Thunderhelm."
An elvish vessel made of living wood captained by a druid who can cast control water.
A completely unseaworthy vessel covered with barnacles and rotted wood and coral and no sails, manned by sahuagin and pulled by giant sharks.
The entire crew is a single oblex.
A boat that seems to sail itself, because a water elemental carries it like a hermit crab shell.
A ship enchanted and inhabited by an archmage. Perhaps manned by a crew of unseen servants. The ship can fly and has magical traps in it for intruders.
A ship entirely made out of bone that is actually a vast undead creature.
A seaworthy mimic.
A colossal ship manned by some frost giant raiders and ogre deckhands.
A aggressive fleet of keelboats manned by kobolds, goblins, grungs, bullywugs, kuo-toa, thornies, vegepygmies, or wood woads.
An armada of orc or hobgoblin longships with stealthy bugbear saboteur ships.
A ship completely infested by an aberrant growth weaving its tentacles in between the planks, attempting to lure people aboard and consume anyone who goes below deck.
A ship on the back of a giant manta ray, covered with giant crabs.
A cruiseliner-sized ship that contains a vast library and sails from plane to plane. An androsphinx guards it and doesn’t like humans to use it.
A vessel made from a fruit-bearing treant. It’s vaguely ship-shaped, but has fruit trees sprouting from its top. The fruit looks enticing to scurvy sailors, but the treant doesn’t like its fruit to be picked.
A vampire captain and his crew of vampire spawn.
